Staring Down – Behind Those Pearly Gates

Cat staring down from behind those pearly gates
Don’t bother trying to put your faith
In a world of rent by the hour
Where houses only have disposable plates
Don’t misplace your faith in love
Love for people, plants, pets
Homes, husbands, or children-
Not for any of the above
Times were different then
You ruled with a steady hand
And an iron strong, silk soft heart
Way, way back when…
Children were children and they came first
Dinner time, bath time, bed time
Any and all – no matter how big – or small
Or how near it felt your heart or head might just burst
From the fears of a world that seems so simple now
Safe, complete, perfect
No runaways, no latch key kids –
Everyone took care of their each, the others, and all knew how
Don’t you worry – all your lessons haven’t been forgotten –
Some flowers are allowed only blossoms
While those let to fruit somehow just forget
And fall to the ground – outsides shiny, insides rotten
As these petals quiver and begin to turn under
Don’t forget to have a little faith in your flower
There never misplaced – forever strong
Like your song, that still chases away the thunder
Dole out your faith, but save your hope
There’s nothing left now for the fruit
But the blossoms will continue
To climb your winding path, lessons left behind on that steady slope.
