“Coal Miners’ Daughters”

Children of uncertainty
One and all driven by the land
Always remembering to say goodbye, goodnight, and I
Love you, just in case

Mountains can be unpredictable
Imploding on a whim
Never minding and never caring for those
Encased within the ebony walls
Rumbling until there is not a single
Sound or soul remaining

Dreams of rock falling
All around and over
Upset and awaken little
Girls from their sleep
Hearts pound and hot
Tears sting soft cheeks as
Every light in the house comes to life
Running through the door is a
Soot covered face who whispers “it was only a bad dream”
